Prestone dex cool 50 50 antize reviews2/17/2024 ![]() One of the major purposes of coolant, "antifreeze" is to maintain a proper chemical balance in the cooling system to deter acids and electrolysis. I choose to disagree with the posting using the temperature protection as the source for the percentage of coolant mixed with water. I used to live in upstate NY and there were some days in January when outside ambient temps went down to -20 and the garage temperature would be down close to zero so I always tried to have a 50/50 mix in all of my cars especially the Tahoe that sat outside all the time. Since you are in Arkansas you may not have an issue with the mix and the car will run cooler in hot weather since water cools better than antifreeze. I would suggest you use a hydrometer to check the freezing level of your current mix. So with a 50/50 mix for an 11-quart capacity once I finish the final flush and the drained fluid runs clear I close the petcock and add 5.5 quarts of non-diluted Dexcool followed by topping off with fresh water. I flush everything out so I have fresh water in the system and then add in the amount of Dex Cool based on the cooling system capacity. Once you flushed the old fluid out of block/heater then you had to add straight Dex not the 50/50. That would have been OK if you hadn't flushed the old fluid out of the engine block and heater. What did I do wrong? You used a 50/50 mix. Now I’m worried about the 4+ quarts of tapwater that are left. What concerns me is? I was only able to get 8 quarts of the 50-50 mix back in. For the corrosion and anti-freeze protection of a 50/50 mix, the mixed specific heat would be about 0.80 BTU/lb-degF which is still below what pure water can do for heat transport from the engine block to the radiator. ![]() So water is far superior for transporting heat per lb of flow than pure EG. Pure water has a specific heat assigned as 1.0 BTU/lb-degF and pure ethylene glycol is 0.60 BTU/lb-degF. The primary reason to change out your coolant mixture on a scheduled time interval is the degredation of the anticorrosive properties of the coolant. Pure water has been shown to provide better cooling capability than an antifreeze mix but does not give the required chemical protection. I don't have my owner's manual handy but a rule of thumb is at least 50/50 coolant to water mix and not to exceed 60% coolant. If the coolant (antifreeze) level is not high enough, it will not protect chemically against the aforementioned maladays. Look up how low this protects you and if your car doesn't see temps that low call it a day. What you are now according to your post is 4 qts of Dexcool and 8 quarts of water or a 33% mix. Doing this is a minor PITA and may take awhile since the thermostat is closed and the only passage around it is usually a small hole. You now have a 50/50 mix with all new coolant. If you are a perfectionist then you can flush the system with tap water until clear water comes out, Then drain out half the coolant capacity and replace with 100 % coolant. If you want it all out then you can use pressurized air to force the rest out and even then you won't get it all. You can't get all the coolant out gravity draining using the petcock on the radiator. ![]() In fact, I've had dealership service directors PHONE ME to ask for information about the cars they're servicing, specifically VW TDIs (with a cult-like following, whose owners know INFINITELY more than the dealer techs, who see them infrequently.Today I changed out the DEXCOOL in my C5 Corvette with new DEXCOOL. Dealing directly with the top administrators gets everyone's attention. The guy up front is frequently the newest, least experienced person, and is frequently overwhelmed with how complex modern cars are. I make it clear to him/her that I'm an enthusiast, I spend time on well respected online car forums, and that I want to deal with the most experienced service adviser on staff. Whenever I start into a new dealer relationship, the first thing I do is visit the service director.
